Guarding
Does your dog steal items, refuse to give toys back, or show aggression when in possession of food or items?
This issue can be very dangerous, and can escalate over time.
Why do dogs guard?
Guarding is a natural instinct. Afterall, we would all die if we just gave up our meals to our friends all the time. However, in the domestic setting, it has often become misplaced. Naturally guarding would be focused on survival items such as food. In the home, dogs have plenty of food, but they instinctually learn from the reactions of the humans around them that silly items such as socks, paper and knickers are important for survival. This often starts at a young age while dogs are naturally exploring new items with their mouths, and learning what is fun and what is edible (and what is not!). At this point in development, our reactions can shape our dog’s future reactions.
It can also be related to gut issues, pain, stress and anxiety, so discussions with your vet are important.
It is a complex issue, that needs to be unpicked.
Help - my dog is…
Aggressive when in possession of food/items
Rapidly swallowing items/food if they think I am going to take it
Or hiding/evading with items for hours at a time!
How can we help? - We would recommend starting with a behaviour consultation (vet referral required)
Help - my dog is….
Being a pest and stealing items,
He thinks it is a big game to run away with… (fill in the blank)
I want to play with my dog, but I cannot because he just keeps playing keep away!
I have to tidy everything away and strictly manage the environment, for fear he may hurt himself
We would recommend a 121 with Laura, Sam or Amy or you can take part in our 4 weeks course - Thieving to Retrieving (scroll down for more info below!)

Does your steal items? Is your dog reluctant to drop stolen items or even toys? Does your dog show any resource guarding tendencies?
Or maybe your dog just loves retrieving, and you really want to nail this skill in preparation for doing further obedience or gundog work.
This 4 week course focuses on all things retrieving.
In Thieving to Retrieving Bronze we will start to teach the dogs to:
- Take items on cue
- Drop items on cue
- We will try and progress the dogs to retrieving a variety of items
- We will also work on leaving items on cue, building up to an awesome temptation alley.
- Laura will try and tailor the class to the needs of those attending, so if you have any specific problems, you will have an opportunity to discuss this.
Note - if you are dealing with severe aggression at home in relation to resource guarding, it would be wise to have a consultation first (please email Laura at info@mindsalikeanimaltraining.com)
*Dogs must be able to be around other dogs in our spacious training barn.
