Expert dog behaviour support

Meet Laura

Laura Ward is a Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB), who specialises in dog aggression and reactivity. Rehabilitating aggressive and reactive dogs takes time, patience, understanding and compassion. However, there are two of you in this relationship and Laura understands that supporting the human end of the lead is just as important as the dogs.

As an ABTC Accredited CAB Practitioner, and full member of the APBC and TCBTS, many pet insurance companies will cover Behaviour Consultations and Reactivity Programs.

Laura has been training and rehabilitating dogs since 2014. Prior to this, Laura spent ten years working in veterinary practice as a registered veterinary nurse.

Laura is also heavily involved with assessing up and coming trainers and behaviourists, and is passionate about industry regulation. Laura is the Vice Chair for the TCBTS, and assesses Clinical Animal Behaviourist applicants for this ABTC Practitioner organisation.

Dog Behaviour Services

Behaviour problems are tough for any pet owner and can be tricky to spot from regular training issues. Struggles with behaviour can look like

  • Anxiety (inability to settle, reactive behaviour, excessive vocalisation, panting, lip licking, yawning or clingy behaviour)

  • Aggression (staring and fixating, growling, lunging, barking, chasing away, snapping, biting).

  • Reactive behaviour (excessive signalling, staring, lunging, barking, chasing, snapping, biting).

  • Fighting within the multi-dog household (staring and fixating, growling, lunging, barking, snapping, biting, excessively controlling resources)

  • Possessive behaviour (sometimes referred to as resource guarding - staring, lying over objects, refusal to drop/retrieve, evading if approached, growling, snapping, biting)

  • Separation issues (Please note for cases only involving separation related issues Laura would recommend referral to a separation anxiety specialist, as these behaviourists often work in a different manner and are able to offer more online support).

If any of these sound familiar, Laura is here to help.

Please note: If you are struggling with jumping up, recall, loose lead walking, general obedience, car travel issues, these are classed as dog training issues. Head to our Dog Training page to get help with these issues.

If you are not sure, please get in touch through our Contact Us page and we can help figure out the right solution for you.

  • A full behaviour consultation is required if you have multiple issues or complex issues.

It is so useful to sit down and organise the problems, assess priorities, gain an in depth understanding of the various issues and set an organised plan as to how to manage and improve your pet's behaviour.

This requires time, which is why for complex or multiple issues a full behaviour consultation is the best option.

Typical problems which would suit a dog behaviour consultation may include:

    • aggression and reactive behaviour (please see reactivity programme option also)

    • separation issues

    • anxiety

    • fighting within the same household

    • resource guarding‍

    • handling/co-operative care issues, including aggression towards the vet

What does a dog behaviour consultation include?

    • Liaison with your vet to obtain a veterinary referral and medical history

    • A full consultation that is roughly 2-3 hours long. This will enable time for a through history to be taken, plenty of opportunity for you and your family to discuss your feelings about your dogs behaviour, allow me time to share my knowledge on behaviour and why your dogs issues have developed and do some practical training (including a walk if relevant). By the end of the session a plan will be in place.

    • A full report is provided post consultation (to you and your vet). There will be a lot of information to take in, so this takes the pressure off remembering it all.

    • A 1hr follow up (usually 4-6 weeks later). This is an important chance to review the plan, and make changes/improvements as necessary.

A booking link will be sent to you via your confirmation email.

    • Any email support between sessions or liaison with your vet that is required within a 6 month window of your consultation.

    • Processing of insurance claims

    • Travel expenses

Any additional follow up sessions (1 hour) - £75 (£90 inc VAT)

Please note: Unfortunately weekend appointments are not available.

A vet referral is required to book a consultation.

This means we will contact your vet on your behalf but we ask that you inform them and give them permission to share information with us.

Why choose Laura?

Being a strong believer in up to date theoretical knowledge, over the years Laura has completed accredited qualifications in behaviour and training including:

  • Advanced Diploma in Canine Behaviour Management

  • BSc (Hons) in Applied Behaviour

  • Achieved Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB) status

This qualification is only awarded to people by The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB) who have proved their ability to be professional, effective, humane and considerate to both animal and owner, whilst taking a tailored and measured approach to each individual case. Taking a more clinical approach to behaviour change means Laura looks at all factors that could influence behaviour, considering health, diet, learning, experiences, neurochemistry and the biology of stress responses.

Knowledge is power

Laura believes that the behaviour and training industry should be regulated just as veterinary nursing and other medical and counselling professions are.

Currently, it is not a legal requirement to subscribe to a professional organisation or follow any sort of code of conduct. However, Laura is affiliated with the organisations below, supporting industry regulation.

  • Certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB)

  • Full member Association Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) No.01184

  • Animal Behaviour & Training Council (ABTC) Accredited Practitioner

  • Full member and vice chair for The Canine Training and Behaviour Society (TCTBS)

  • Full member Association Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC)

  • Scentwork UK instructor and Judge

Membership of these organisations means Laura has undertaken extensive theoretical and practical assessment to prove that she possess the skills and knowledge required to apply training techniques based on up to date, researched, methods, whilst being empathic and considerate of the animal and owners emotional state.

Laura is covered by professional indemnity cover and public liability insurance.
